"The Killing Moon" is a vocal by the ring Repeat & the Bunnymen. It was released on 20 January 1984[1] as the lead unmarried from their 1984 album, Sea Rain. It is one of the ring'southward highest-charting hits, reaching number 9 in the UK Singles Chart, and oftentimes cited equally the ring'due south greatest song. Ian McCulloch has said: "When I sing 'The Killing Moon', I know there isn't a ring in the world who'south got a vocal anywhere about that."[2] In a retrospective review of the song, Allmusic journalist Stewart Mason wrote: "The smart apply of strings amplifies the elegance of the tune, bringing both a musical richness and a sense of tranquility dignity to the tune."[3]

Lyrics [edit]

Co-ordinate to the liner notes of Echo and the Bunnymen's Crystal Days box ready, Ian McCulloch woke up ane morning with the phrase "fate up against your will" in mind. In a 2022 interview McCulloch said: "I love (the vocal) all the more than considering I didn't pore over information technology for days on finish. I morning, I just sat bolt upright in bed with this line in my head: 'Fate up against your will. Through the thick and thin. He will wait until y'all give yourself to him.' You don't dream things like that and call back them. That's why I've always half credited the lyric to God. Information technology's never happened before or since." McCulloch attributed the use of astronomical imagery in the vocal to a childhood interest in space.[4]

Music [edit]

The chords of the song were based on David Bowie'southward "Infinite Oddity", played backwards. The organization of the song was partially inspired by balalaika music that Les Pattinson and Volition Sergeant had heard in Russia. The guitar solo had been recorded separately by Sergeant whilst tuning up and was inserted in the song at the proposition of producer David Lord. The strings on the track are a combination of Adam Peters' cello and keyboards played by the producer.[5]

"The Killing Moon" has been featured in films such as Donnie Darko,[10] Gia, The Daughter Side by side Door and Grosse Pointe Blank, television shows such as I Am Not Okay with This, 13 Reasons Why, Billions, and diverse video games.[11] Artists that have covered the song include Greg Laswell, Wendy Rule, Pavement,[12] Nouvelle Vague, Grant-Lee Phillips, Katie Griffin, The Distants, Chvrches[13] and A-ha.
